The Huayna Picchu is the taller of the two mountains you can see on any Machu Picchu postcard. The hike to its summit is gradually becoming really famous among travelers worldwide. Here we tell you what to take to have a perfect adventure at the sacred citadel!
Clothes: Feel Comfortable in your Hike
- Cap or sun hat
- Sunglasses
- T-shirts (preferably polyester ones, they keep you dry for the longest time)
Light jacket (if you are coming on rainy season -between late November and late March- also bring a rain poncho just in case) - Light pants, preferably nylon ones, even better if reversible to shorts
- Comfortable, mountaineering socks (to prevent blisters)
- Good hiking boots (give them some use before bringing them to Peru so your feet will be adapted)
- Tennis shoes (for walking around)
- If you want to go the Aguas Calientes’ famous, quite relaxing thermal baths (recommended), please also bring: swimsuit, towel, sandals, comb
Electronics: Create Memories!
- A photographic camera
- Your smartphone will also be very useful for quick photos, videos, music playlists
- Their respective charging cords
- Headphones
- Some people are bringing portable solar panels for electrical supply
- Also some people bring a GPS device for fun and adventure
Food and Drink: Of course!
- Bring a bottled water
- 1 liter of coca leaves tea is a great idea: it is powerful for altitude sickness (if any) and an ancient Andean strong energizer
- Some snacks or fruits
Health: Enjoy the Hike with No Worries
- Sunblock (mandatory)
- Insect repellent (mandatory)
- Antibacterial hand gel (before eating on tour, etc)
- Antiseptic pads and adhesive bands (for minor scratches, if any)
Miscellaneous
- Passport. Do not forgegt to bring it.
- Cash in soles for your personal expenses in Aguas Calientes (food, shopping, thermal baths, Inca massage, etc)
- Binoculars could be great for the unique view from the Huayna Picchu top (optional)
- Small plastic bags for wet items, garbage, etc
- Note: not allowed at the Machu Picchu site according to recent regulations: tripods, professional camera, large backpacks, walking poles, selfie sticks, cigarettes, any alcoholic beverage
- Finally, we recommend you to avoid before the Huayna Picchu hike: alcohol, cigarettes, coffee, energetic drinks, stimulants other than coca leaves tea. Drink plenty of water and get rest
