The Rainbow Mountain (also known as Vinicunca) is becoming one of the top trekking packages in the world! The multi-colored site is nearly one-of-a-kind, with the only other being located in China! In this article, we will inform you about the optimal season for visiting it!

Just a short previous note: in theory, the best season for doing the Rainbow Mountain hike is from April to October because there is no rain, but nevertheless we’re going to describe the conditions of the rainy season, because for hardcore hikers this may be the ideal time instead!

Doing the Rainbow Mountain 1-Day Hike on Dry Weather

Here in the wonderful Cusco region, the dry season goes from April to October. Temperatures tend to be cold, so does the wind, and particularly from June to August such conditions go to extremes with very cold weather, strong winds, and sometimes even snowfall. As the Rainbow Mountain is located at around 16,400 feet (5.000 meters) above sea level, pack some thick hiking clothes, including a woolen hood and scarf. For most, this is the best season for the obvious advantage of the total lack of rain, nothing of it at all. You’ll be trekking amidst invigorating, crisp breezes in the untamed beauty of the Cusco Andean range, perhaps even amid gentle snowfall. What an exhilarating adventure awaits! Only in the Cusco Andean chain.

Doing the Rainbow Mountain 1-Day Hike in Rainy Season

Ok, so the rainy season in Cusco goes from November until March. Although the temperatures are usually warmer, overall this whole highlands region is cold (it begins to warm up as you descend towards the Amazon jungle which is not the case here, the Rainbow Mountain trek is all about going up, way up). Winds will be also blowing hard and here comes the good part: rains are quite heavy although mainly brief, not very frequent and there can be hail occasionally. So, if you want to challenge the Andean chain at its “meanest” and bring up your inner trooper, this will be the best season! Just there are several measures to be taken, like having waterproof gear (although you’ll get somewhat wet eventually…), managing body temperature, protecting electronic devices, and so on. Remember it’s going to be a roughly 2 -hour hike to and from plus 1 hour at the Rainbow Mountain site itself for the guided visit, pictures, etc.

Note: for both dry and rainy seasons, we strongly recommend using a hiking pole, it saves energy and provides much better balance. It’s available for rent with us.

Additional Packages with TOUR IN PERU
