The Inca Jungle 4-Day trail to Machu Picchu is a novel, different way to reach the lost citadel. There is biking and hiking on recently found alternative paths, and much more. Here are the FAQ about this unique adventure on the Cusco wilderness.
1. What is original on this package?
This trail includes great mountain biking on day 1 and for the remaining days the hiking will take sections different than the regular Inca Trails! Also you will visit several typical villages along the way, relax at thermal baths and finally walk up to the Machu Picchu citadel for a professionally-guided tour.
2. What is the best time for doing this tour?
Actually, we have people doing this trail all year long. But information about weather is always useful. From April to October it is dry season here in the Cusco region, climate is cold but no rain at all. From November to March it is rain season, temperatures are warmer but there are brief, not daily pourings, terrain can be muddy for a while, but it will depend on the hiker’s perception, this can be an added adventure. As we enter the subtropical rain forest, temperatures will rise.
3. What about the biking equipment?
It is included. We’ll provide a BMX Scott bicycle, a helmet, visor, gloves, elbow and knee pads. You must bring biking clothes, preferably windproof ones. This part of the tour will have a 5-hour duration!
4. How is the terrain for the bicycle part?
This is really an amazing section of the Inca Jungle 4-Day trail. At 12:00 noon our transportation will reach the Malaga pass (4.316 meters above sea level), the biking starts there, across rough terrain in the middle of mountains, snowies, valleys and rivers, but as you go on the altitude is decreasing because we’re headed to the lower jungle border.
5. Will altitude symptoms be an issue?
This subject is a FAQ. To avoid altitude sickness through the entire package, it is recommended that you spend a few days in Cusco City before (3.400 meters above sea level) so your organism will learn to compensate for the lack of oxygen on these highlands. Drinking coca leaves tea is a very good measure for energy boost and also bottled water. A very small percentage of hikers will need pills but they get them going alright. We have a support car for the biking section so you’re totally covered.
6. How is the hiking part?
It starts on day 2, and will take you across the old Inca paths in the middle of the most astonishing, beautiful nature, both Andean and subtropical jungle border, all the time. Moreover, the hiking includes walking tours of typical villages, guided visits to Inca archaeological sites, relaxing hot springs, typical flora and fauna, local food and drinks. Feel the strong energy flow of nature and also take many great pictures.
7. Are we going to sleep at campsites?
No. On the Inca Jungle 4-Day trail, the 3 nights will be spent comfortably in hostels (included). Dinner and breakfast are also included.
8. What should I know about physical fitness?
The biking part takes 5 hours on uneven, rough ground and the hiking is mixed upwards and downwards for a total of around 17 hours (roughly 6 hours daily), so you must be on a good level of physical stamina. A troubleshooting, patient and achieving mindset is also key. For this FAQ, the best answer is that can have some previous training in your place, going to a countryside area and doing the biking and hiking for some hours, 2 or 3 times.
9. What should I bring?
A very important FAQ we’re going to answer now. We have already covered this subject for the bicycle part on question 3. Now for the hiking part: sun hat, sunglasses, polyester t-shirts, light jacket, nylon pants (better if reversible into shorts), mountaineering socks, used hiking boots (to prevent sores), a pajama. If on rainy season, add a waterproof jacket or rain poncho. Sunblock and bug repellent are mandatory. A walking pole is absolutely recommended, we have them for rent. If you want to dip in the thermal pools, bring a towel, swimsuit and sandals. Finally, a suitable, not heavy backpack.
Lastly, you could take the chance of spending some time in Cusco City for doing any of our wonderful, relaxing 1-day programs, like the Sacred Valley of the Incas Tour, the Cusco City Tour or the Maras Moray Tour. Please check this website to read about our packages.
