Machu Picchu Site on the Map
Peru is such a wonderful country! It’s located in Western South America. To the North, there is Ecuador and Colombia, East we have Brazil and Bolivia, South there is Chile and to the West the immense Pacific Ocean. Also, we have an amazing geographical diversity: long coastal deserts, the mighty Andean range, and the adventurous Amazonian jungle.
Machu Picchu is located in the Cusco region, Andes mounts, Central-South Peru, but towards the border of the rain forest, thus at a lower elevation. Cusco City Valley stands at 11.154 feet (3.400 meters) above sea level and Machu Picchu at 7.972 feet (2.430 meters) asl. The ancient Inca luxury retreat is in the Urubamba Valley, a mighty one surrounded by massive green hills and thick forests. The spot where the site was constructed is 44.7 miles (72 km) northwest of Cusco City, following the course of the Urubamba River.
Visit the “Lost City of the Incas” in 2024
First, almost everybody must stay in Cusco City for a while, where you can take the chance to know this amazing town: old Inca and Spanish constructions, plenty of Andean products (textiles, craftwork, organic ones like quinoa, maca, coca leaves), excellent bars and restaurants, enchanting natural beauty.
The trip to and from the sanctuary is also an unforgettable experience, done on trains designed with panoramic windows, comfortable seats, top service on board, and more. (This is for our classic packages. Another spectacular way is doing one of our Inca Trails. You can check the website for all information). The Aguas Calientes station/village, next to the citadel, offers a great staying time among delightful nature, shopping at the typical market, relaxing at the hot springs, visiting the Inca history museum, getting natural treatments and massages at the Andean spas, top gastronomy in its bars and restaurants.
Any map is just the prelude to all the real-life wonders at the Inca site. A warm, subtropical climate in the middle of a jungle environment, in a mighty valley of staggering beauty and powerful, relaxing, reviving natural energy. Any time of the year is great to visit the hilltop citadel, although from November to February (rain season) there is fast rainfall mostly twice a week. However, this season also offers very interesting reduced prices in most cases.
