DESCRIPTION OF PLACES TO VISIT
The experience is truly unique as we journey from an imperial city to the border with the neighboring country of Bolivia. There are beautiful places worth visiting along the way:
- Andahuaylillas Church: Known as the Sistine Chapel of America due to its artistic finishes. It’s a colonial construction with a simple structure featuring three stone-carved crosses on the facade. The interior boasts original works such as the penta-lingual door, created by Cusco artists.
- Raqchi Archaeological Park: Also known as the “Temple of Wiracocha” or the “Inca Parthenon,” it’s an important Incan archaeological site from the 15th century. It stands out for its bold engineering and is considered one of the most impressive works by the Incas. The complex includes the imposing Temple to the God Wiracocha, a majestic stone and mud construction showcasing the greatness of the Incan State. The archaeological area is extensive and complex, featuring elements like the military barracks, the priestly core, granaries, and the Inca baths, among others.
- Pukara: Located near the city of Puno. This is where the famous “Pukara Bulls” are made, traditionally hung on house doors as a good luck charm. The Pukara people were very important in pre-Incan times, possessing knowledge of engineering, hydraulics, and architecture. The museum exhibits valuable ceramic objects and lithic pieces.
